Dear Parents,
We would like to extend an invitation to all parents of Loyalsock Township High School students in grades nine through twelve to attend the “Financial Aid Night for Parents and Students.” We are hosting this event on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the high school auditorium. Please note that the date for this event is in error on the printed LTSD school calendars. Mr. Don Shade, Regional Director of PHEAA (Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency) will be the featured presenter. Mr. Shade has over twenty years of experience in the field of financial aid and has also served as the Financial Aid Director of Pennsylvania College of Technology.
If your student is planning to attend higher education after high school, this meeting will be of great benefit to you, regardless of your student’s current year in school. Changes in the economy have resulted in changes to financial aid programs. Mr. Shade will address these changes and discuss ways in which parents and students can plan for the future. He will specifically address the federal and state programs, the guaranteed student loan program, and parent loans. Information about completing specific financial forms for private schools, such as the College Profile, will also be discussed.
We will also be hosting an event specifically for seniors and their parents. On the evening of Thursday, February 5, 2009, students and their parents can come to the high school library and actually file their FAFSA online (Free Application for Federal and State Assistance). Mr. Shade and others will be in attendance to assist parents and students with filing their FAFSA. Because we will need to reserve laptops for attendees, we are asking that you reserve a time between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM to complete the process. Reservations can be made by calling the high school Guidance Office at 326-3713. Once registered, we will provide you with information about the materials you will need to bring on that night.

Senior Deadlines
Seniors, this one's for you...
Please make sure you are checking those application deadlines! November 1st was a big one, and November 15th is popular, too...that's next week! If you need transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc, you need to see your counselor now! Please do not let it go until the last minute!
We encourage all students to complete their applications by the time we break for Thanksgiving. If you haven't started yet, get a move on!
Please let us know if you would like to meet with a military recruiter. Our recruiters this year have been great about meeting with students to give them information about all of the opportunities the military can offer.

The Lighthouse
On Friday, October 17th, the faculty and staff of Loyalsock Township High School and Middle School participated in a “Dress Down for the Troops” collection, donating items for a coffee house on a base in Afghanistan.
Major Abrahm Di Marco, son of Allen Di Marco, Loyalsock High School principal, sent information to his father via email about The Lighthouse, a coffee house built by and for soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Soldiers volunteered time to construct, wire, and paint the coffee house, which also houses a base Chaplain on the second floor. Soldiers use this area to relax and experience a little taste of home while they are so far away from family and friends. While they were able to find the equipment and staff to keep it open 24 hours a day, they were in need of the little extras such as cups, stirrers, creamers, sugar, tea, and hot cocoa. Employees of the Loyalsock Township High School and Middle School donated such items. Bean Grinders Coffee, located at the corner of Four Mile Drive and Northway Road, also contributed a case of gourmet coffee for the cause.
Monica McCarty, HS Counselor, and Brooke Stiber, HS English Instructor, coordinated the effort. “I am really pleased by the turnout, and very happy to know that so many people care enough to contribute. Some of our students even heard of the faculty's efforts and took part in the donation,” said Miss Stiber. Mrs. McCarty also commented, “I was surprised when I saw the pictures. The building was not what I expected to see. I expected to see some kind of event tent with some tables and chairs under it. This is a nice two story building with windows, a counter, a television, and all. One look tells you how much care and effort those men and women put into building this place.”
The duo contacted the Family Readiness Group, an organization that is finding local businesses to cover the cost of shipping the three large boxes full of donated items. In exchange, the schools will make a donation to the Family Readiness Group.

Mrs Stanzione has been a busy lasy! She recently worked with juniors in their English classes to interpret ASVAB scores and discuss career planning through the I-Search paper. Students discussed their values, talents, and desires surrounding their chosen career paths. They thought about such questions as: How much postsecondary education do you need to qualify for this job? Do you want to work outside or in an office? Do you want flexibile hours? If you want to make a lot of money (and most of our students do!), how hard are you willing to work for it? 50 hours a week? 60? Do you want to have time to raise a family? Students must consider the answers to these questions (and many more!) in order to find out more about their chosen career path and whether it is right for them. This process is a major component of our graduation project, which all students must satisfactorily complete in order to graduate.

College Board has received our PSAT materials, and we hope to return them within the next month. We should also have more concrete information about Governor's School by then. If you care to take a peek now, check out their website by clicking here. There are schools for everything from Agriculture to Zoology. The list is located on the top left side of the page. Come On Down!
Ok, folks...We only have 75 students registered to take the PSATs. That's awful, especially since both juniors and sophomores may register now! The PSATs are the best indicator of SAT success out there. The amount of information students receive from PSAT score reports is invaluable in preparing to take the SATs. If you are even thinking about going to college after high school (that means for a certificate, 2-year, or 4-year degree) you should take the PSATs! Get down to the Guidance office and register! We have many students lined up to help you through difficult material, and we make sure that student pairs are comfortable working with each other. PSAT Registration begins TOMORROW!
Here it is...the moment you've all been waiting for...PSATs! YAY! Here is more information...
The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Competition) is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Loyalsock Township High School. If you are college-bound, this test is a must for you! Even if you took the PSAT as a sophomore, we highly recommend you take it as a junior because ONLY juniors can qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Your test results will be returned to you before Christmas, and it is an excellent way to prepare for the SAT I in the winter/spring. Remember that the PSAT does not qualify as a College Entrance Exam and is not included on the high school transcript.
The cost of the test is $13.00, and checks should be made payable to Loyalsock Township High School. Any student who has difficulty paying the fee should contact either counselor about a possible fee waiver.
We will open registration for Juniors ONLY on October 1st. On October 8th, sophomores may begin registering for the exam. NO sophomore registration will be accepted before October 8th. Students should register in the Guidance Office.

ASVABs Today!
We are pleased to have some members of our US Armed Forces joining us today. They are here to administer the ASVAB exam to our juniors. This is a major part of our graduation project. The results are a great indicator of students' strengths and areas of need in a variety of areas (math and reading skills, electronice information, auto and shop information, general science knowledge, and mechanical comprehension). We travel into english classrooms to review student score reports, discuss questions, and talk about how to integrate the valuable results with students' desires for postsecondary planning. Students use this data, along with several interest inventories, information about current job trends, information related to students' career choices (such as education required, work environment, etc), and their job shadowing experience to create a paper called the "I-search." This paper, along with all of the above components, comprise the junior portion of the graduation project.

Busy, busy, busy!
It feels like we have a revolving door in the Guidance office!
Eastern University, McCann School of Business, Albright, and Penn College have all visited us within the last few days.
We have met with over half of our new freshmen--what a great class! We have also checked in with all of our new students to make sure things are going well for them.
We are working hard with our seniors to make sure we have answered their questions about college applications, military service, scholarships, and job applications. If you haven't come to see us yet, have no fear--we will come find you! No matter what you want to do after high school, we can help you stay organized and create the plan that's right for you. Now is the time. If you wait too long to begin the process, you may miss important deadlines!
College Night occurs on Thursday night from 6:30-8:30 at Lycoming College. Over 75 colleges are set to participate. If you plan to attend college (for a certificate, Associate's, or Bachelor's degree), you should attend! Bring a friend--even better, bring your parents!

Penn State is coming on Wednesday at 9:00am! This is always our biggest visit, so get your passes ASAP! All together now... WE ARE! PENN STATE!
We will begin conducting our 9th grade focus groups at the end of this week. We meet in small groups with all freshmen to discuss course selection, getting involved in activities, and any other HS info. We meet during Foundations for Success, so tell your freshmen we'll see them soon!

Thanks, LHU!
A representative from Lock Haven University came today to meet with students. They had some great questions. Did you know that LHU requires that ALL students in EVERY program complete an internship before they graduate? It is extremely beneficial to have that "real-life" experience in your chosen field before you enter the workforce.

Many of you have emailed or called us requesting the SAT dates for this year. Lock Haven University will be coming to LTHS tomorrow at 9am to meet with interested students. Stop by the Guidance office for a pass if you would like to meet with an LHU admissions rep.

Penn State is offering another round of SAT Prep courses at Penn College. The cost per course is $120. The dates are as follows:
Verbal: October 9 (6pm-9pm), 12 (1pm-4pm), 16 (6pm-9pm)
Math: October 19 (1pm-4pm), 23 (6pm-9pm), 26 (1pm-4pm)
Please call 322-5771 to register. Spot are only available on a first-come, first-served basis, so register early! If you plan to take these courses, a great SAT date for you would be November 1 (registration deadline 9/26).

Whew!
Holy cow, this week just flew by! Now that schedule changes are through, things should begin to calm down...unless you are a senior! We will be contacting you soon to discuss your postsecondary plans. Some of you industrious types have already brought us an application or two. Please be sure to bring us a stamped, addressed envelope every time you want us to send a transcript!
We will soon post our current dates and times for college representative visits to LTHS. Keep your eye on our bulletin board for more information.
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, PA is hosting an open house on 9/25 at 6:30. Go to http://www.stevenscollege.edu for more info. They offer a variety of majors such as Architectural Technology, Cabinetmaking and Wood Technology, HVAC Technology, Respiratory Care, CAD Technology, and many more.

We're Baa-aaaack!
Have you missed us? With PSSA testing and scheduling prep, we have been regrettably absent from our beloved blog. However, now that PSSAs are on their way out (for now) and scheduling is on its way in, we have a lot to do...and some announcements to make!
Thanks (again) to Mrs. Griggs, we are offering another SAT Prep course, beginning in May. If you did not get a chance to register before, now is your chance! The cost is still $60 (+ about $20 for the book). Come see us for more info and to register.
Scheduling is slated for the week of April 21st. As in previous years, each student will receive a 6 minute scheduling appointment with his/her school counselor. If you have questions about your particular options, please contact us to set up an appointment beforehand. We "go live" to the school on April 14th at 1:15pm. Hopefully, we can answer some or all of your questions during that session!
Junior meetings are still in progress!
Seniors: CHECK THE SCHOLARSHIP FILE! Deadlines are rapidly approaching, and some have already passed.
Cross-Age Teacher training is April 10th!Students will participate in team-building activities, learn about current drug trends, and work on their lesson plans. What an exciting program!

More Mock Interview Pics
Chris told me before his interview that he was a shoe-in for the job in his group because the pens in his pocket made him look "smart." I think the fact that he has two pens gave him an unfair advantage. Of course, Mike has his own advantage, what with the glasses and all. As Chris said, "Everyone knows that glasses make you look smart!"
Jackie said she was nervous, but she looks calm and cool here.
Bobby and Chris should have called each other's stylists...it's so embarrasing to show up wearing the same outfit as someone else! Good thing they didn't interview in the same group!

Great Job, Seniors!
Our English 12 students did a GREAT job with their mock interviews today! Our interviewers told Mrs. Herman and I repeatedly how impressed they were with our students! Everyone dressed for the part (even if it was only for a brief while!), presented themselves well, shook hands, made eye contact, and generally represented LTHS in a professional way. Congratulations to those of you who got the "job!" The competition was definately tough, and you should be proud.

Senior Mock Interviews
Mrs. Herman and Mrs. McCarty will be entering English 12 classes again to work with our seniors on interviewing skills. They will learn about appropriate dress, eye contact, communication skills, and "selling" themselves and their skills to prospective employers. Tomorrow, community volunteers will come to LTHS and interview our seniors for a fictitious job. Our students are expected to dress accordingly for their mock interviews. Each community volunteer will choose a student in his/her group to earn the job! Best of luck!

Summer Health Careers Camp
Welcome to another week! Congrats to all of our Odyssey of the Mind participants--great job at regionals!
If you are interested in health careers, Penn College will offer a Health Careers Summer Camp on their campus from June 11-13. They will present hands-on workshops, lead tours of Susquehanna Health facilities, and provide information about career areas such as surgical technology, dental hygeine, nursing, occupational and physical therapy, radiology, and paramedic technology. Don't Panic!
Please don't panic if you have not yet had your junior meeting with your school counselor! If you'd like, you may stop in to make an appointment; rest assured, however, that we will be sure to see each and every junior before the end of the year! Our goal is to meet with each junior before scheduling (which we hope will take place at the end of April). We look forward to seeing you, addressing your concerns, and helping you and your family make a plan for your future after LTHS! As always, if you have concerns, please stop in. See you soon!

Business-Minded Opportunities
We are aware of several summer opportunities for our high school students who are interested in business or entrepreneurship. The first is PA Free Enterprise Week. This is a week-long program for sophomores and juniors only. In teams, students turn an imaginary company into a financial success by creating budgets, determining marketing costs, conducting research and development, and financing stock offerings. The cost for this program is $135. Many of our students have attended and enjoyed this program in the past. The final application deadline is April 4, 2008. This summer, Penn State is offering an Entrepreneurship Camp to all students who have completed grades 9-12 at their Smeal College of Business during June 22-27. Students can learn how to develop and propose business ideas, and then implement them. The camp will also instruct students about how to work in teams and sort through patent and proprietary information issues. The fee for this camp is $695 if you register before May 15; after that, the fee increases to $745. SAT Prep Class Details...Thanks again, Mrs. Griggs!
It happened sooner than we thought...Mrs. Griggs is on the ball today! Here is the info for the SAT Preparation courses offered right here at LTHS:
Listed below are the scheduled dates, and each class will be in session from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

SAT Info- BIG news!
There has apparently been some question about the correct SAT hotline number. It is 1-866-756-7346. You can also go to www.collegeboard.com for most SAT related information (including registration), but the hotline number is great for addressing specific questions.
We are working on a FANTASTIC opportunity for SAT preparation! Some of you may have seen the fliers in the Guidance office about the SAT prep sessions offered at Penn College through PSU. We will be able to offer them here at half the regular cost, thanks to Mrs. Griggs's handywork! These classes will take place in April. As soon as we have specifics, we will post them.
Mrs. Stanzione and Mrs. McCarty will soon begin "junior meetings" to discuss your postsecondary plans. Parents are certainly invited to attend these meetings! Please have them contact either of us to set up an appointment. Whether you want to admit it or not, parents are a very important part of that process!
