The Lighthouse
On Friday, October 17th, the faculty and staff of Loyalsock Township High School and Middle School participated in a “Dress Down for the Troops” collection, donating items for a coffee house on a base in Afghanistan.
Major Abrahm Di Marco, son of Allen Di Marco, Loyalsock High School principal, sent information to his father via email about The Lighthouse, a coffee house built by and for soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Soldiers volunteered time to construct, wire, and paint the coffee house, which also houses a base Chaplain on the second floor. Soldiers use this area to relax and experience a little taste of home while they are so far away from family and friends. While they were able to find the equipment and staff to keep it open 24 hours a day, they were in need of the little extras such as cups, stirrers, creamers, sugar, tea, and hot cocoa. Employees of the Loyalsock Township High School and Middle School donated such items. Bean Grinders Coffee, located at the corner of Four Mile Drive and Northway Road, also contributed a case of gourmet coffee for the cause.
Monica McCarty, HS Counselor, and Brooke Stiber, HS English Instructor, coordinated the effort. “I am really pleased by the turnout, and very happy to know that so many people care enough to contribute. Some of our students even heard of the faculty's efforts and took part in the donation,” said Miss Stiber. Mrs. McCarty also commented, “I was surprised when I saw the pictures. The building was not what I expected to see. I expected to see some kind of event tent with some tables and chairs under it. This is a nice two story building with windows, a counter, a television, and all. One look tells you how much care and effort those men and women put into building this place.”
The duo contacted the Family Readiness Group, an organization that is finding local businesses to cover the cost of shipping the three large boxes full of donated items. In exchange, the schools will make a donation to the Family Readiness Group.

Mrs Stanzione has been a busy lasy! She recently worked with juniors in their English classes to interpret ASVAB scores and discuss career planning through the I-Search paper. Students discussed their values, talents, and desires surrounding their chosen career paths. They thought about such questions as: How much postsecondary education do you need to qualify for this job? Do you want to work outside or in an office? Do you want flexibile hours? If you want to make a lot of money (and most of our students do!), how hard are you willing to work for it? 50 hours a week? 60? Do you want to have time to raise a family? Students must consider the answers to these questions (and many more!) in order to find out more about their chosen career path and whether it is right for them. This process is a major component of our graduation project, which all students must satisfactorily complete in order to graduate.

College Board has received our PSAT materials, and we hope to return them within the next month. We should also have more concrete information about Governor's School by then. Some applications are already available. Please make sure to check deadlines and check all needed materials! Some schools require letters of recommendation from certain teachers, but some don't. Some schools have earlier deadlines than others. It's worth it to double check this info!
